about

Joyful New Parade was recorded in 2001 and originally appeared on the 2002 EP release 'Songs from the Blue Parade'. The EP was well received in Australia and Europe and got the attention of EMI and other labels at the time. The track was originally recorded as a demo and then later fleshed out with overdubs including drums, bass and violin. As with many of my early recordings from this era I was in the habit of recording everything with dynamic microphones such as the SM58 and SM57, and I was still yet to catch up on the technical aspects of home recording, including the need for a decent condenser microphone for vocals. Thus, all my vocals at the time were limited, lacking depth and dimension and I often would mix with my vocals low in the mix. However, these tracks hold a certain naive magic as I was more interested in just making the music and not the golden rules of music production. My heart was leading the way, and this track is an example of that trial and error process.
